CEGP condemns life threat to News Break reporter
The College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP), a group of campus journalists condemns the recent death threat to Glenda Gloria, the News Break reporter who consistently reported the alleged involvement of the president to the ‘jueting pay- off’ in connection to the rigging of the 2004 presidential elections. Recent reports pointed the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as the architect of the said threat. According to the group (CEGP), it is not Glenda Gloria’s life that should be threatened, but President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo’s political career instead. It is not Glenda Gloria who should halt her doings, but the Malacañang’s Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
‘The recent political development puts the president’s political career in peril. Hence, to save it, the administration must do maneuverings by using its political allies and even its armed forces to silence the vocal critics.’, stated Jose Cosido, CEGP national president. ‘The Filipinos have witnessed how the administration deals with the members of the press. After the case of gagging the FOCAP members during the president’s press conference in Malacañang last week, now another attack to our rank is staging to protect her selfish interests’, Cosido continued.
The CEGP branded Ms. Arroyo as an enemy of the press and the number one violator of press freedom in the country. According the group, the present press freedom situation in the country is the manifestation of the escalating cases of curtailing the messengers’ rights. Earlier this year, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), had branded the
‘The press’ initiative to conduct investigative reports regarding the issues that the president and its family are involved is inevitable. It is its orientation as the fourth estate of this democratic society, and preventing them from doing this is definitely a violation to its right as a member of the press. The messengers are even aware of possible retaliation from the government, but it will not impede the journalists sworn duties.’, the CEGP president announced.
CEGP reiterated again its position calling for the president’s removal from power. ‘The administration has given the media a reason to further intensify the nationwide campaign to call for her resignation. She should learn from Erap’s experience of gagging the press that made contribution to his ouster.’, Cosido ended.
The CEGP challenges its fellow journalists at the mainstream to fight back on any attack that would possibly happen. It had mentioned the vulnerability of the journalists situation in connection to the present political scandals that the present administration is involved
